We will be upfront about our bias - we are the local firm - but this comparison sticks to structural differences you can verify yourself, because for some situations a franchise is genuinely a fine choice.

Where franchises are strong

• Convenience and hours: During filing season, chains run extended hours and walk-in availability that small firms cannot always match.
• Standardized process: Corporate software, checklists, and review procedures produce consistent results for straightforward returns.
• Simple W-2 returns: If you have one W-2, standard deduction, and no complications, a chain will file it accurately, and so will good DIY software.

The structural differences worth knowing

Staffing model. Franchise offices staff up with seasonal preparers who complete the company's training course each year. Skill varies by individual office and preparer - some are excellent and return every season, others are in their first year. At a local firm you can ask exactly who will prepare your return and what credentials they hold. At ours, returns are prepared under two IRS Enrolled Agents who do this year-round, every year.

Continuity. Chains cannot always guarantee the same preparer twice, and seasonal offices consolidate after April. A local firm gives you the same people every year, which matters more than it sounds: multi-year context catches carryforwards, depreciation schedules, basis tracking, and estimated-payment patterns that a first-look preparer can miss.

What happens after April 15. Tax problems rarely arrive during filing season. IRS and Georgia notices show up in July; payroll questions come up all year. Ask any preparer - franchise or local - the same question: "If I get an IRS letter in August, who exactly answers the phone?" You want a specific person's name, not a support line. Notice response and audit defense is a core part of our year-round work.

Pricing model. Franchises typically price per form, so the fee is assembled from the pieces of your return and can be hard to predict before the appointment. We quote a range up front based on your situation and flag anything that changes it before the work starts. Neither model is inherently cheaper for every return - but predictability matters when your return is more than a W-2.

Business services. If you run a business, the return is only one piece. Payroll, bookkeeping, sales tax, entity questions, and quarterly estimates are ongoing operations. • Single W-2, no complications, want it done this weekend: a franchise office or DIY software will serve you fine.
• Self-employment, rental property, S-corp or LLC, multiple income sources, or a prior-year problem: continuity and credentialed depth pay for themselves, usually literally.
• Any business with employees: you need a year-round relationship, not a seasonal appointment.
