Enrolled Agent FAQs
What is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?
An Enrolled Agent is a tax professional licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS. EAs earn the credential by passing a three-part IRS Special Enrollment Examination covering individual and business taxation, representation, and ethics—then complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years.
How is an EA different from a CPA?
Both can represent you before the IRS, but an EA's license is exclusively federal tax-focused and issued by the IRS itself. CPAs are licensed by state boards and cover a broader scope (audit, financial statements, etc.) but EAs specialize deeper in tax law. For tax preparation, planning, and IRS matters, an EA is the direct-to-the-point credential.
Which EAs are on the Haynes team?
Pat Haynes, EA (founder, practicing since 1989) and Renee Avant, EA. Randy Hughes is an AFSP-credentialed preparer. All three are listed on the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications.
Can an EA represent me in an audit or appeal?
Yes—unlimited representation rights. An EA can attend IRS exams, respond to notices, negotiate with IRS Collections, represent you before Appeals, and file Tax Court petitions where appropriate. We handle representation engagements directly without you needing to talk to the IRS yourself.
How do I verify an EA's credentials?
Use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers at irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf—search by name, city, or ZIP. Haynes Business Services staff appear with their active EA and AFSP credentials.
