Updated IRS Mileage Rates for 2024–2025
The IRS has updated the standard mileage rates, and it’s important to make sure you're using the correct numbers when tracking and deducting business mileage.
Current IRS Mileage Rates
• 2024: 67¢ per mile
• 2025: 70¢ per mile
Mileage deductions are valuable, but they must be supported by proper documentation.
Mileage Log Requirements
- Date of travel
- Starting point
- Destination
- Purpose of the trip
- Vehicle mileage at start and end
- Total business miles

Keeping clean and detailed records ensures your deduction is accurate and compliant.
When to use actual expenses instead
Consider actual expenses if you have high vehicle costs (lease, insurance, maintenance) or low mileage. Keep fuel, repairs, insurance, and depreciation details to compare both methods.
Quarterly habits that help
- Download mileage reports at the end of each quarter.
- Photograph odometer at year-end for documentation.
- Separate personal vs business trips weekly to avoid cleanup later.
