Create an ID.me account with the IRS

Take a look over the information below for how to sign up for an ID.me account with the IRS.

This is a great tool to have so you can access your account anytime and always know what they know!

STEP-BY-STEP WALKTHROUGH

  1. GO TO THE IRS SIGN-IN PAGE
    Visit: https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
Click “Sign in to your Online Account,” then choose “Create an account.” You will be redirected to ID.me.
  2. BEGIN YOUR ID.me REGISTRATION
Click “Create an ID.me account.” Enter your email and choose a password. Check your email and click the verification link.
  3. SET UP MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (MFA)
Choose how you want to receive security codes: text message, phone call, or authentication app. Enter the code you receive to continue.
  4. VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY
You will need one of the following: Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport. You’ll be prompted to take a photo of the front, the back, and a selfie.
  5. ENTER PERSONAL INFORMATION
Confirm your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and address. This must match IRS records.
  6. ALLOW ID.me TO SHARE YOUR VERIFIED IDENTITY
Click “Allow” when prompted so the IRS can receive your verification.
  7. ACCESS YOUR IRS ONLINE ACCOUNT
Once complete, you’ll be redirected back to the IRS website where you can view balances, payments, refund status, notices, transcripts, estimated payments, child tax credit info, adjustments or offsets, and more.

WHY YOU SHOULD CREATE ID.me

  • Prevent identity theft
  • View your IRS information anytime
  • Faster tax issue resolution
  • Access transcripts instantly
  • See exactly what the IRS sees

Troubleshooting tips

  • If selfie verification fails, move to bright, even light and clean the camera lens.
  • Address mismatch? Use the address from your last filed return first, then update after login.
  • Locked out? Wait 24 hours or select video chat verification inside ID.me.

Use our IRS resource links or send us a screenshot if you need help verifying.
