2025 Changes to Form 1099-K — What You Need to Know

The IRS has announced major updates for Form 1099-K reporting beginning in the 2025 tax year — and these changes affect many small businesses, online sellers, and gig workers.

1. Reporting Threshold Reverted to Pre-2022 Levels

Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed July 4, 2025, the IRS restored the original reporting threshold for third-party payment platforms. A 1099-K will now be issued ONLY if:

  • Payments for goods or services exceed $20,000, AND
  • There are 200 or more transactions during the year.

This overrides the previously planned lower thresholds (such as $600) that never fully took effect.

2. What This Means for Taxpayers

Even if you do NOT receive a 1099-K, you must still report all income received through cash, checks, credit/debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, Square, Stripe, Etsy, eBay, etc. The form is simply an informational document — but taxable income must still be reported.

3. What You Should Do

  • Compare your merchant statements and platform reports with any 1099-K received.
  • Verify that your business books match gross receipts across ALL payment methods.
  • Keep strong documentation for deductions and business expenses.
  • If you share a payment terminal with another business or person, keep records of how income was divided.

4. Why This Matters

Many small businesses depend on third-party platforms. These changes reduce the sudden tax form confusion seen in recent years and restore a familiar reporting structure.

Keeping clean books will ensure you are fully prepared for tax season — even if a 1099-K is not issued.

5. Quick checklist for 2025

  • Download 2025 transaction summaries from every platform in January 2026.
  • Reconcile totals to your bookkeeping software monthly.
  • Save payout reports showing fees so net vs gross is clear.
  • Flag personal transfers in apps to avoid mixing with business income.
